Introducing a masculine voice for Alex
The problem
The introduction of Alexa’s male voice addressed a key customer request for greater personalization and choice. Users had long expressed a preference for an alternative voice option, whether due to personal taste, better comprehension of lower-pitched tones, or concerns about gender representation in voice assistants. By launching the first masculine-sounding Alexa voice, we not only met these user needs but also tackled broader industry criticism regarding gender bias in AI. The challenge lay in maintaining Alexa’s established personality while crafting a distinct yet equally engaging male voice. Additionally, technical constraints, such as fine-tuning pronunciation, cadence, and intonation across different dialects, required careful linguistic and UX considerations. Ensuring a seamless experience—where users could switch voices intuitively without disrupting existing interactions—was critical to the project’s success.
The Customer Experience
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Make it stand out.

Why is this important?
Customers have consistently requested a male voice option, and at Amazon, we obsess over customer feedback. Whether due to personal preference or the practicality of hearing a lower-pitched voice better, some customers want more choices. This feature was built to provide that flexibility while also addressing concerns around gender bias in voice assistants.
We launched the first masculine-sounding voice in the US (English) in July, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Over 340K customers are now using the new voice, representing 1.23% of Monthly Active Users (MAU), with a +26.3% Month-over-Month growth. Following this success, we expanded the same masculine-sounding voice experience to five international locales.
